Making Donations to the Poetry Society

"Poetry is either language lit up by life or life lit up by language." (Peter Porter)

As an independent and non-profit making arts organisation with charitable status, we depend on public funding for our ongoing success. If you feel inspired to make a secure-pay (Visa, Mastercard or Switch) donation right now, please visit our Donations page.

Donations will be allocated to specific projects by the Poetry Society's elected Council of Management. All donors will be credited on our website and in Poetry News.

If you have any questions about donating, please contact  finance AT poetrysociety.org.uk e.g. would you like free advice from a solicitor expert in charity law about how to go about leaving a legacy to the Poetry Fund in your will? Do you know a company or trust which might like to donate to poetry?

At the Poetry Society, we believe that poetry is for everybody: for established 'literary' poets whose finely crafted work wins prizes and extends the boundaries of the form, and for children and adults who want to find ways to express love, joy, grief and the sheer adventure of being alive. The Poetry Society has found many ways to bring poetry into the lives of people who might not normally come across it. We've been putting poets in schools for nearly thirty years and developing projects, like the 'Poetry Places' scheme, to introduce poets and poetry into the pub, the supermarket, the hospital and the office. We've been exploring the role that poetry can play in healthcare, education and the workplace. But above all, we've been celebrating the richness and power of an art form that enriches the human heart.

Like many arts organisations, we are only able to do the work we do with the help of grants, sponsorship and donations from individual poetry enthusiasts. The Poetry Fund has been launched to raise vital new money for our current work and future projects. It was initiated by the family of Geoffrey Dearmer, at 103 the Poetry Society's oldest member. The annual interest from their generous donation has enabled us to fund a prize for new poets.

Already we have received over forty thousand pounds in the past two years from individual donations and small trusts. The Poet in the City Group, led by Poetry Society member Rosamund Smith, has raised an additional £20,000 from companies and foundations in London for poets to visit inner city schools. These donations have been vital to the Poetry Society's work.

Thank you!
